How frequently do we get happy at the success of Sunita Williams?? How often have we not celebrated the success of Bobby Jindal when he got elected as a Governor?? How frequently do we not feel good when our fellow countryman achieves something in life?? That too especially in some foreign soil!! I have always wondered, WHY??? Is it because there is something wrong in our country, or achievers in our country?? Why do we fail to see the success of our people in our own land?? How many of us appreciate what the armed forces are doing for us?? How many of us appreciate the lakhs of NGO's in the country?? How many of us wholeheartedly rejoiced when Vishwanathan Anand won the World Championship??
Brain drain is one of the biggest issues debated over. A brain drain or human capital flight is an emigration of trained and talented individuals to other nations or jurisdictions, due to conflicts, lack of opportunity, health hazards where they are living or other reasons. Considering the scenario in India, conflicts is definitely not the reason. Lack of opportunity, to some extent is a contributing factor, but not so big either. Health hazards, definitely no!! Lets assume the thing, that opportunities are the only factor contributing to brain drain. If that were so, we would not have seen entrepreneurs like NR Narayanamurthy, and others. I can quote a lot of names here, but why i frozed on him is because he has started from the scratch. At a time when he could have gone out, earned a lot of money, settled down comfortably with his family and never bothered about anything else. But he chose to be different. He had a vision . Many people may say, money is an important parameter. I do agree. Investment is a major important factor. But then, we have a live example in front of us all. NRN did not have all that money. What was more important is that he had self belief and an astounding ability to create a team and move forward.
Frankly speaking, I dont feel its the lack of opportunities. I would say, its the lack of vision. Lack of clarity in thoughts. It tends to happen in the initial stages of the career. I dont say its wrong to go and work abroad. But, once someone goes out, its very very rare that he returns back before retirement. Just think of a very simple fact. The Govt spends lakhs of rupees on the education of every individual. Higher education is not cheap. Colleges offering quality infrastructure, quality manpower, quality lectures and facilities are very less in the country. And its not easy to retain things like that. One lack of focus is enough to just spoil the entire game. Inspite of all these, we have a good number of quality educational institutes offering professional courses at a very very subsidised fees. Its not that education is cheap. We only fail to realise that, our education is costing the exchequer something!! And its our moral responsibility to do something for that. I again remember my professors words here. Unless you do something for the society which has brought you up to whatever you are, everything else is waste.
I still adore a person from my hometown, who worked in Infosys, and has contributed substantially for the infrastructure development of the school he had studied in. And believe me, that Govt. school is today on par with all other private schools there. And it has benefitted thousands of students who are studying there. So as I said, its more of a lack of vision rather than lack of opportunities. We just cannot sit complaining saying there are not opportunities. Opportunities will not come to you everyday. We have to create opportunities.
One of my professors always used to say "You may find a thousand reasons to avoid doing a certain thing. You only need to find one reason to do it!! " My colleague also always keeps on telling me "Stop reasoning why something may fail. Instead start reasoning, how it will succed!!" Two thoughts on similar lines, from two people who dont even know each other!! So, once again I wish to reaffirm. Opportunities are present here in plenty. We just need to find one.

hmm.. a well thought blog...its true that we tend to undermine the achievements of Indians on our own soil while we applaud that of Indians abroad...but that scenario is changing...we have started to realize the opportunities that India provides to people ready to take action and work hard for the success they want! And that shows in the reverse brain drain...proof enough that we are changing!
ooyyyeeee!!!!
Sunita Williams, Bobby Jindal etc.. are Americans, of Indian origin.. :)
ask them and they might even say, we are from America and not Indians living in America.. :)
V Anand lives in spain.. now comeon.. how does it matter for a chess player, more so the NUMBER 1 player where he stays??
What does Sabeer Bhatia do for India??
THIS list is endless, too :-)
tell me, what can they do sitting thousands of miles away from India.. for India? Do they even deserve any accolades from us?????
who's really mean??
(a small example) do you know of the Uberoi (or Oberoi, whatever) sisters AND Amritraj cousins.. who play tennis for/in India?? have you realised why?? there is NO opportunity for them back in US.. :-)
People like NRN, Prakash Padukone, Sachin, Bhutia etc have succeeded being in India and have proved that there if one reallly wants to do something, they will :-).. so who are the mean ones ???
But wait.. what are you trying to say?? on one hand you say that we are being mean so as not to appreciate the achievements of "Indians" while on the other you say that there is no dearth of opportunities here --> True.
Why then, must we even bother to appreciate someone who doesn't even
1) care about India
2) LIVE in India ?
Pradeep!!!!
Thanks a lot for the wonderfulk comments!!!!
I mean only one thing!!!! Why do we appreciate the success of only Indians settles abroad?? Thats the first point!!! Why dont we notice that there people in India as well who succeed equally well too!!! How often have we recognised that??? When Sunita Williams goes to space, she gets one of the Padma awards!!! Whereas there are hundreds of people in India, involving themselves in social activities, contributing to the development of the society, doing whatever they can for the people who simply go unnoticed!!! What I am trying to say in the first part is that we fail to identify talent lying within!!!! We want external agencies to do that for us. One simple example!!! How many of us had even heard of Amartya Sen before he won the Nobel??? And after he did that, we gave him the Bharat Ratna!!! Couldnt that have come earlier????
Secondly, I am trying to convey that there is no lack of opportunity to set up something, settle dwon in India and succeed. You do something for the cpountry or not is secondary. The country has done something for you, Morally its your responsuibility to pay back. Whether you do it or not is not important now. I am only saying that "lack of opportunities" should not be a reason to go abroad!!!!
nithin, glad to see Radio Idli on your blog roll! long time since we had your voice on the site...
@nitin
for me, your posts are sounding verrrry contradicting.. i am not understanding it at all!
anyways.. about certain people being recognised abroad first and then they are known faces here.. it's totally dependent on the industry.. now in India, there are not as many resources (OR/AND comparable talent) to really judge an individual of his caliber. having said this, i am not saying that it's there abroad :)
yes, hundreds of people are doing social activities, and THAT is why it's not easy or practical to bring everyone into the limelight. and more often than not, fame gets into the head of a person and then that person is a waste.. he'll stop doing whatever he was doing!!
there is a lack of opportunity in terms of infrastructure, grants from the government etc here.. for the simple reason that there are VERY FEW organisations which provide WORLD-CLASS infrastructure - in whichever field, and MANY who want to make use of this..obviously they will be left behind if they stick around here..
then what, according to you, should be the reason to go abroad?
@ pradeep
frankly speaking, i feel you are confusing yourself dude!!!
well isnt that a fact that we fail to recongnise talent within?? what you said simply proves that!!! and if its not there abroad, how come they are recognising it???
and about social service, forget about hundred people, how many of us even remember even a few??? Tell me how many social servants to you know??? Baba Amte passed away recently, how many of us are even aware of this or even know who he was???
and about lack of opportunities, what do you think?? Govt must support every TD and H doing studies??? thats too much to ask!!! and if you are not aware, Govt spends a huge amount on the education of each one of us!!! Whatecver you and me spent on our education at NITK, is hugely subsidised!!! and that subsidy is only to ensure that everyone can afford to strike gold!!! And paying money for education doesnt necesarily guarantee quality.. And the live example was 60 kms from our institute!!!!
For one thing ...there is a dearth of infrastructure in India..whether we like to face it or no...no point in denying that...however even with that shortcoming we still manage to be the world's third largest scientific workforce...
that is the positive approach to face problems...Yet...How many of us even know who is Vandana Shiva ..the world-famous environmental activist??
she has been given awards world-wide for her work on ecology in India..yet v as Indians, ourselves fail to recognize her for her work!!!
So it all a matter of one's perspective and attitude ...we need to change ..thats true...yet going abroad or settling in India is a matter of one's personal opinion ...
Oh Yeeaah !!!!! Vision is what Matters .... Nice Blog Re :)
